Cactus

Shoot Date: April 2005

Spiky and forbidding, and not particularly colorful during most of the year, May brings colorful blossoms and new growth to cactus clumps all over Southern California.  I came across this one at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa, in the Santa Monica Mountains near Thousand Oaks.

The closed buds have a peachy, almost mauve tone to them, and reminded me strongly of the frosting roses my mother would use to decorate birthday cakes when I was small.

Interestingly enough, the opened
flowers are yellow.
Here you can see some of the progression from mauve-salmon buds to yellow blossoms.

Close-up of a blossom's center, which looks a little like fireworks.  Quite an amazing display for an otherwise dull, fortified plant.
